Prepositions express a relationship between to NOUNS, and thus are closely linked with the concept of CASE.

We normally learn that für means for and auf means on, etc. However, this is FALSE and leads to BAD WRITING and speaking! Prepositions are only generally translatable, and must be learned in context, because every preposition in German has multiple "translations" into English and vice-versa.

A few types of prepositions are: The first three of these groups are easier to use, because the case of the nouns they join are pre-defined. The 2-Way prepositions are the most difficult to use correctly, since there is often no way other than memorization to help you with case.
